After five memorable nights in Unawatuna and a day exploring Galle Fort, we continued our journey along Sri Lanka’s southern coast to Mirissa. Known for its beautiful beaches, Coconut Tree Hill and whale watching, Mirissa quickly revealed a quieter, more relaxed character that made it the perfect stop before heading into Sri Lanka’s hill country.
Getting to Mirissa from Unawatuna
Our host Tharanga kindly arranged a tuk-tuk driver named Dilan, making the short coastal journey effortless. After arriving around midday and being welcomed with a refreshing drink at Suriya Homestay, we settled in before exploring the town.
Staying at Suriya Homestay
For two nights we stayed at the peaceful Suriya Homestay. The spacious room, warm hospitality and quiet surroundings made it an excellent base for exploring Mirissa. Breakfast quickly became one of the highlights of our stay, with fresh fruit, juice, tea and a variety of Sri Lankan dishes served each morning. We were also delighted to see peacocks wandering around the property almost every day, a small but memorable part of our experience.
First Impressions of Mirissa Beach
Later that afternoon we wandered down to Mirissa Beach. The broad curve of golden sand, palm trees and relaxed atmosphere encouraged us to explore without any fixed plan. Walking along the shoreline and nearby streets turned out to be one of the best ways to experience the town.
Exploring Beyond the Beach
Continuing our walk, we reached Mirissa’s fishing harbour where colourful boats and local fishermen offered a different perspective of the town beyond its beaches. It was a reminder that Mirissa remains a working fishing community as well as a popular tourist destination.
More Than Just Whale Watching
Although Mirissa is famous for whale watching, we chose not to join a tour. Even without it, we found more than enough to enjoy through beach walks, viewpoints, local food and the town’s relaxed coastal atmosphere.
Visiting Parrot Rock
Crossing over during low tide, we climbed Parrot Rock for beautiful views across Mirissa Beach before returning to the shoreline to continue exploring.
Sunset at Coconut Tree Hill
Coconut Tree Hill became the highlight of our stay. Despite the crowds, the leaning palm trees, glowing evening light and sweeping ocean views created one of the most memorable sunsets of our entire Sri Lanka journey.
Food in Mirissa
During our stay we enjoyed both international and local cuisine. One evening we had pizza at DelTano’s, while the next we visited Dewmini Roti Shop for a delicious Sri Lankan rice and curry meal. The rhythmic sound of chefs preparing fresh kottu added an unforgettable atmosphere to the evening.
Is Mirissa Worth Visiting?
Absolutely. Even without whale watching, Mirissa offered beautiful beaches, scenic viewpoints, excellent food and a relaxed atmosphere that made two nights feel just right.
Continuing Our Journey to Ella
As much as we enjoyed our time in Mirissa, our journey through Sri Lanka was far from over. With the memories of beautiful sunsets, quiet beaches and warm hospitality still fresh in our minds, it was time to head inland for a completely different side of the country.
The next morning, we took a local bus to Matara, where we caught another bus to Ella, swapping the coastline for misty mountains and tea-covered hills.
